After dinner, Kylie looked at the Christmas party schedule, then checked her watch. So far, everything was on time. Bailey was working with the catering staff, and Pastor John was keeping the speeches and entertainment on track.

Bailey tapped her on the shoulder and handed her a cup of coffee. “Santa Claus has just arrived,” she whispered.

Kylie’s eyes widened. “He was supposed to be here half an hour ago.”

“His truck wouldn’t start. He’s getting dressed and should be ready in ten minutes.”

With a relieved sigh, Kylie sat back in her seat. “Does he need us to help with anything?”

“It’s all under control. Just sit here and enjoy yourself.”

Kylie wished it were that simple. Throughout the main course she had compared notes with John, making sure he was comfortable with what was happening over the next part of the evening. She’d also checked that all their special guests were here to receive their surprise Christmas wishes. And in-between all of that, she’d enjoyed Charlotte and Ben’s company.

“How are you feeling?” Ben asked.

“A little nervous.” She bit her bottom lip. “Don’t be surprised if John asks you to come onto the stage.”

Ben frowned. “To thank me for donating the Christmas trees?”

“Something like that,” she murmured.

Gently, Ben placed his finger on her chin and lifted it toward him. “I didn’t hear you.”

Kylie looked into his eyes. Ben had told her it was difficult to hear people talk in a noisy room, but until tonight she hadn’t realized just how hard it was. “John will be thanking you, but it’s for something else, too.”

His eyebrows arched. “Should I be worried?”

Butterflies danced inside her tummy. “I hope not.” She was used to seeing Ben wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. The jet-black suit and crisp white shirt he’d worn tonight had left her speechless. Instead of being able to relax around him, she felt on edge, as if she were about to leap into something she couldn’t get away from. “When John gives you an envelope, all you have to do is say thank you.”

Fortunately, John chose that moment to walk onto the stage. “I’d like to begin the next part of the evening by thanking everyone for being here. With your support, the tiny home village is becoming one of the most talked about community projects in Montana. By December, we’re hoping to have fourteen tiny homes rented to families in desperate need of accommodation.”

Everyone in the room clapped and cheered.

John picked up the envelopes that had been sitting in Kylie’s kitchen. “As well as raising money for the tiny home village, the church has another project we’re working on. Most of you will be aware that two months ago, the Christmas events fundraising committee posted a message on Facebook. Within hours, hundreds of people had replied to the post, telling us about their Christmas wishes. Over the last few weeks, Santa’s Secret Helpers have been working hard to make a lot of dreams come true. Before I announce the next Christmas wish recipients, I’d like to ask Ben Thompson to come onto the stage.
